Primarily correspondence and loose notes of the Rev. Jaquelin Marshall Meredith concerning his religious education and service as rector of Episcopal churches in Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Stafford counties, Va., his service as chaplain to the 47th Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Confederate States Army of the Valley, and genealogical research on the Meredith and related families. Some materials also concern the education of young women in nineteenth-century Virginia and African American slavery. The collection also includes correspondence and miscellaneous records of Meredith's brothers, Henry Clarkson Meredith (as a lawyer in Sacramento, Calif.), John Scott Meredith (as a farmer at Widewater, Stafford County, Va.), and Steptoe Pickett Meredith (as a farmer in Missouri and managing vineyards in California); and of a sister, Anne Elizabeth Meredith.

Jaquelin Marshall Meredith (1835-1920) was trained at the Virginia Theological Seminary as an Episcopal minister and served as rector of a number of parishes in Virginia during his career. Two of his brothers left Virginia and wrote back to family members concerning the settlement of family estates and their own activities across the United States.
